Tournament Chaos builds?
« on: February 01, 2012, 08:08:45 AM »
Sorry to post this in the rules section, but I wasn't sure where else to post it.

I'm thinking of bringing a Chaos team to Spike12, but I'm uncertain of a good build. Do any of you have suggestions that use a lot of mutations for modeling, while still helping the team be somewhat competitive (hard with Chaos, I know)?

The big question with chaos in tournament is whether or not you want a minotaur.  I personally would run without one but i see the merits in having them.
With that in mind, here's two rosters:

4 CW : 400k
7 Beasts: 420k
4 RR: 240k
2 CL 20k
2 AC 20k
-theme is RR's.  Chaos have no skills so you're gonna need 'em.

4 CW : 400k
6 Beasts: 360k
1 Mino: 150k
3 RR: 180k

On either of these rosters, if you feel comfortable playing with one less RR, i would get a spare beastman.  You're mostly av8 so you WILL be outnumbered at times.

Obviously skill choices will the the bigger question than whether or not you want to take a mino, so i'll run over that quickly.
First thing, with the skill package system, i would opt out of taking any doubles on a chaos roster in order to have more skills.  6 skills vs 4 is huge on a team that starts with ZERO skills.  And yes, this means skipping Leader.
So first and foremost, you want a claw player for those pesky dwarves and orcs.  If you have the mino, perfect.  If not, give it to a CW.
Next. I would get sure hands on another CW.  Two reasons.  1, wardancers.  2, you DONT want to be blowing a team RR picking up the ball on turn one.  Without much block you'll be blowing enough of them on hits.
After that, get two block (cw's) and at least one tackle. the last skill is yours to choose, but i would reccomend having a second tackle in tournament.

Lewdgrip is a good choice as well for 150k

6 3 3 9  Loner, Pass, SureHands, Strong Arm, Tentacles

This would free up another skill choice.
I find you lack of faith....... disturbing.

Lewdgrip is certainly a good choice as chaos' stars go in tournament.  However I do have a few problems with him.  Firstly, rookie chaos rosters should never be throwing the ball on offence unless something went wrong (which does happen).  Even if you use him for just picking up the ball, it makes no sense economically because you'd be paying a premium for skills that you never really use (pass strong arm and str3 tentacles).  Plus having a loner on the pitch is never fun, especially without block or dodge or the likes.  You have to ask yourself what you're giving up in order to afford him.

On a plus note, av9 means he'll be around for a long time, and sure hands certainly does mean you'll have an extra skill available in your package.  You could pick up a kicker , or KOR, or DP if that's your thing.

If you're looking for fun with modelling, you could put Tentacles on the Minotaur (or a CW if you don't take the Mino), at least 1 Claw, and a Big Hand to represent Sure Hands (or just take Big Hand, but I'd suggest Sure Hands instead). None of the other Mutations are really helpful without other skills, eg Two Heads is cool but best on someone with Dodge, VLL is nice if you have Leap, Disturbing Presence and Foul Appearance help usually when you have them on several players, and even then they are seldom selected, Extra Arms help if you're Catching, and Like Lee said, you shouldn't be passing the ball, etc.

Really the most competitive Mutation is Claw, and you'd probably only want 1 anyway. Tentacles and Big Hand are just suggested if you really want to play with sculpting.

Thanks for the suggestions, fellas...I like the idea of Lewdgrip a lot, thanks. The nice thing about tentacles is modeling them are pretty easy. I like nig hand too, the only issue is the models I'm using already have some big hands!

I agree with pretty much everythig lee said about tourney chaos.

My planned build will be:

Mino.  With claw
4 cw with 2 block, guard
6 beastmen with sure hands and tackle
3 rr

I'd like to have lewdgrip but he is too expensive and the chaos mino
Is by far my favorite piece. (for those looking to take my heart.  :-[ )

Im thinking I may put sure hands on my last warrior but 5 mv is soooooo slow
Make Blood not Bowl.....  ;)

Negative, I didn't put the work into the Chaos theme. Maybe next year.
